Flexible packaging is soft wrapping with monomaterial or multimaterial structure (by lamination and lamination) that can be made before (pre-made) or during the packaging process, which is done with automatic systems.

Materials and machinability
Prevalent materials are cellulosic, polymer and metal based; availability is in both single preformed pouches and reel form (most applications). Both solutions are handled by packaging machines that act either by inserting the product inside the preformed wrappings or by unwinding from the reel and winding the product, while sealing is always done.

But what is meant by “flexibility”? And what are the many benefits?
Flexibility therefore means not only the mechanical behavior of the casing, but also its ability to adapt to a large number of requirements and performances: light weight, ease of transport, small footprint, barrier effect, integration with pour-dose-close systems, high moldability, high visibility, freedom of shapes and sizes, wide choice of packaging machines, tolerance even at high process speeds, minimal logistics costs from start to end of life, high resistance of the full casing to drops, shocks, high pressures and punctures, compliance with food contact requirements, resistance to thermal processes (sterilization, pasteurization, high pressures), and stability of performance in vacuum and at ambient pressure.
The fields of application are almost total, except for products containing food gases at pressures higher than atomic pressure (such as beers, mulled wines, and soft drinks): in fact, to ensure the seal, the costs would be higher than for rigid containers.

In both single-material and multi-material versions, flexible packaging is also among the most sustainable solutions from both economic and environmental perspectives.
