Farmo Res pioneers of packaging: 60 years of our first patent

In the heart of Milan, back in 1958, there was FARMOGRAFICA, a paper manufacturer dedicated to the production of medicine cases.

This company, driven by an innovative spirit and ingenuity, conceived a revolutionary idea in the 1960s, thanks to its founder Massimo Armetti: to develop a machine capable of producing polystyrene packaging for vials. Thus it was that the mechanical department came alongside the printing department, marking a significant evolution in the production landscape of the time.

In 1964, the intuition became reality with the filing of a patent in Italy, followed by awards in Europe and the United States. This innovation in the field of packaging was celebrated with the Packaging Oscar, consecrating the company as a pioneer in the packaging sector.

And here we come to the actual patent, the original one resulting from Massimo Armetti's inventiveness, filed in Italy on 3 June 1964, which was then followed by the American one filed on 6 April 1965. The latter with the original title: protective plastic packaging for ampoules and the like, as well as processes and equipment to obtain it.

As the official patent document states:
"The invention relates to a machine for producing plastic containers suitable for protective packaging of small articles such as vials, small bottles and the like.
A primary object of this invention is to provide an easy-to-maintain apparatus for producing and filling such containers in a practical and efficient manner.  The containers produced by the present invention comprise a number of small thermoplastic containers which are suitable for being covered by a thermally welded plastic lid. They are produced by feeding a sheet of thermoplastic material into an oven and compression moulding the sheet or a heated portion thereof. The moulded product is then cooled, the recesses are filled with the products to be packaged and the filled containers are covered with a plastic lid, heat-sealed and trimmed. Plastic lid, heat-sealed and trimmed with a peripheral cutter."

This, in short, is the main feature of this patent that marks the first 60 years of our history, the result of the great inventiveness and resourcefulness of founder Massimo Armetti, who not only invented the machine and the patent in the 1960s, but also led FARMO RES to become the dynamic and future-oriented company it is today, keeping it firmly family-run. A true example of great Italian entrepreneurship that has found its ideal home in Emilia Romagna, a land of pioneers and true innovators in the packaging sector.

To celebrate this exceptional anniversary, a customised logo has been created and officially presented at ACHEMA 2024.
